OBITUARY Friends remember student

'Joe' Camp died Thursday after he was in a car accident

Friends of sophomore Charles "Joe" Camp II say they will always remember him as a devoted, caring and generous man.

"Whenever I had a problem, he was always a great shoulder to cry on," sophomore Jennifer Jackson, Camp's neighbor in Klipple Hall, said. "Joe would do anything for you. He would always give me rides downtown, even if he missed a class to do it."

Camp, 20, passed away Thursday at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne after he was involved in a car accident.

"He was a wonderful person," sophomore Erin Eickleberry said. "We were confirmed together, we graduated together, and we came to Ball State together. No matter when you saw him or what mood he was in, he'd always give a smile and make your day."

Camp, a Japanese major, went to Japan in 2001 and planned to teach English to Japanese students when he graduated from college, Eickleberry said.

Camp was an active member of the FIGI fraternity at Ball State. Andrew Koenig, FIGI president, said the fraternity brothers will remember Camp as dedicated friend.

"He put his whole heart and soul into everything he did," Koenig said. "If someone needed something, he'd always be the first person to volunteer, even if he didn't want to do it.

"He'd give you the shirt off his back if it'll get you a better grade or make your day better," Koenig said.

Jackson said she remembers when Camp was first told that he was going to be in FIJI at a Sugarcult concert.

"That was the happiest I've ever seen that boy," she said. "He loved those guys."

Koenig said that Camp was preparing to take a position on FIJI's judicial board.

"He wanted to be as involved as he could," Koenig said.

Sophomore Theresa Hammond, Jackson's roommate, said that besides being an active member of FIGI, Camp enjoyed playing guitar.

"He would learn to play my favorite songs on it and ask me to come over and listen," Jackson said.

Michael Spillman, instructor of telecommunications, said that Camp's classmates in Foundations of Telecommunications will miss him.

"It's going to have a big impact on the class," Spillman said. "There's a certain bond with students."

Camp graduated in 2003 from Valparaiso High School, where he was a member of the football, swim and track and field teams.
