Strong perimeter shooting and stifling defense Saturday were the keys to Ball State's first victory of the season. After falling to Kentucky on Tuesday, the Cardinals moved to 1-1 with a 59-44 win at Detroit.
Point guard Peyton Stovall, who led the team with 14 points and four assists against Kentucky on Tuesday, netted a game and career-high 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting against the Titans.
Detroit suffered just its ninth loss in 97 games at Calihan Hall.
The 44 points allowed were the Cards' lowest total since a 59-42 win over Eastern Michigan in January 1999. Ball State limited the Titans to 38 percent shooting.
Dennis Trammell added 15 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from long range, as the Cardinals shot 12 of 21 from three-point range. Skip Mills chipped in nine points, while he and Terrance Chapman pulled down seven rebounds apiece. The Cards enjoyed a 32-27 rebounding advantage.
Stovall's night included 5-of-5 on three-pointers. His third triple put Ball State up 20-17, and it never lost that lead, stretching it to 33-19 by halftime.
Trammell's fifth trey gave BSU its largest lead -- 47-29 with 13:21 remaining in the game.
Ethan Shaw, Ryvon Covile and Ben Green scored eight points apiece to pace the Titans, who fell to 1-2 on the season. Detroit had stomped Ball State 70-49 in Worthen Arena last season.
Tuesday in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Cardinals traded blows with No. 8 Kentucky and went into halftime tied at 29. Ball State led early in the second half, but the Wildcats went on a 12-2 run, sparked by centers Randolph Morris and Shagari Alleyne, to gain the lead for good in a 73-53 victory.
