Professor Engle told students we need to make our own choiceregarding consumption of animal products "Speaker Praises VeganDiet," Oct. 15].
It is true that we need to make a decision, and it needs to bean informed one. Print and television ads saying milk "does a bodygood" bombard us, but is it well known that they're sponsored bythe Dairy Farmers of America and other industry trade groups? Theconsumption of meat, milk and eggs is even supported by our schoolsthrough the meat- and dairy-laden lunch offerings, which publicschools must serve due to subsidies from the U.S. Department ofAgriculture. Even the widely touted food pyramid was created by theUSDA, which has an interest in selling meat, cheese and eggs.
On the other hand, the American Dietetic Association hasproclaimed that a diet free of all animal products is healthy forall stages of life and may even reduce the risk of certain cancersand heart diseases. Health issues withstanding, the untoldsuffering of billions of animals seems a good enough reason toreduce meat consumption.
