CAP receives grant to study metal bridges

Ball State University's Center for Historic Preservation at the College of Architecture and Planning received a $10,000 grant to study Indiana's surviving metal truss bridges.

The study, financed by the Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, will provide the information needed to nominate many of the bridges to the National Register of Historic Places.

The bridges were built to span Indiana waterways in the early 20th century. Today only about 300 remain, and listing them in the National Register is expected to create more public awareness of the bridges and help in preservation efforts, James A. Glass, director of the center, said.

"The generous Efroymson Fund grant makes it possible for our new center to conduct an important study that we hope will contribute to the preservation of this fast-vanishing feature of the Indiana landscape," he said.
