Ball State to receive $2.6 million for in-state financial aid

Hoosier students get an average of $500 in scholarships

Molly Moyer would not have come to Ball State if she had notreceived a scholarship.

Moyer has the Whitinger Scholarship, which pays for her tuitionand room and board costs.

"I wasn't interested in Ball State until I found out they hadthat scholarship and when I found out it would be possible for meto get it," Moyer said.

Robert Zeller, director of the Office of Scholarship andFinancial Aid, said there was little money available for need-basedaid until the 2003-2004 academic year when the university received$1.2 million for Indiana students applying to Ball State. He saidthe university made the decision to allot the extra money forneed-based aid because tuition rose by $1,000 in 2003.

This year the amount given to in-state students was $1.8million, and next year it will be $2.6 million, Zeller said. Themoney is given to in-state students because it is more beneficialto Ball State.

"Our cost is so high for out-of-state that the money amount willnot have a huge impact on their decisions," Zeller said.

The money received in the form of need-based aid ranges from$500 to $2,000, Zeller said.

In order to apply for this aid, he said students need to fillout the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the deadline ofMarch 10.

If students are not eligible for need-based aid or are notIndiana residents, scholarships such as the one Moyer receivedprovide another option.

Ellen Caskey, director of scholarship development, said thatprivate donations fund 400 endowments, or permanent scholarships, and 600 expendable, or temporary, scholarships.

These scholarships are provided by individual or private groups, she said. Money distributed to students ranges from $150 to fulltuition.

Caskey said students can apply for departmental scholarships aswell by contacting the department's office.

"We are concerned somewhat in some departments about not gettingenough good applicants," Caskey said. "We would like to see morestudents apply."

Caskey said that the Alumni Office also has scholarships forstudents who are legacies and to contact the Alumni office to learnmore.

"Those students that need the money will ask the questions,"Caskey said. "They will seek the information."
