Author to speak, cut ribbon in Richmond

Fellow Notre Dame alum invites friend to lead the events

In celebration of "125 Years of Caring for Kids," author Nicholas Sparks will be making an appearance at the Wernle Children's Home in Richmond, Indiana.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce for the Wernle Children's Home's Wellness Center, which houses a chapel, gymnasium and areas for health services and dining. Sparks is set to speak at around 6:30 p.m. in a presentation where he will speak about his career and expound on his works.

Books will be available for purchase and a signing will be held after the appearance.

Wernle Children's Home Chief Executive Officer Darrell Gordon said that Sparks is the perfect guest to help the children's home celebrate its anniversary.

"We wanted to concentrate on literacy and education," Gordon said. "What better way to do that to invite Nick Sparks?"

Gordon, who attended Notre Dame University with Sparks, said he ran into Sparks around a year ago, and mentioned the event which piqued Sparks' interest.

Sparks is best known for for novels such as "The Notebook," "Message in a Bottle" and "A Walk to Remember," each of which have been translated to the screen.

Tickets are available with a $10 donation until tomorrow and may be reserved by phone at (762) 966-2506 with payment available by Mastercard, Visa, Discover or American Express. The Wernle Children's home is located at 2000 Wernle Road in Richmond.
