Cards to battle tough competition in Middle Tennessee tourney

Ball State is heading on the road this weekend after hosting atournament last weekend. The Cardinals are heading to MiddleTennessee for the weekend and coach Kathy Bull thinks this weekendwill be tougher than the last.

"The depth of this tournament is very good," she said. "Ourplayers will face some talented international players."

After some problems last weekend a couple of the Cards did notmake the trip to Tennessee this weekend. Katie Owens and StephanieFarrar will miss the event this weekend due to shin splints.

"We were afraid that one of them is close to a stress fracture,"Bull said. "We have them in the work-out room double-time over [theweekend], and hope they will be ready for next week."

The Cardinals performed well against several teams at their homeinvitational, but lost all but one game to Miami. Bull said theteam has been working hard over the past week in preparation forthis weekend.

"We've been working on our transition game," she said. "By that,I mean when we leave the base line and head to the net. We hope tobe better than the weeks gone by."

In the opening round of flight A, Jenny Batty will face SariNortie of University of Tennessee-Martin and Jessica Thompson willface Alex Becka of Morehead State.

In flight B, Jennifer Pollack will face UAB's Gulsah Esen andHaly Calderwood will face Memphis's Kristin Noble.

Allison Thimpson will face Alicia Kutyla of Cumberland as theonly Cardinals in Flight C.

Beth Campus will round out the Cardinals lineup by facing onhost Middle Tennessee's Jacqui Williams.

The Cardinals will also move around doubles teams and experimentdue to Farrar and Owens.

"[The injury] takes away depth in singles," Bull said. "But itgives the others in the lineup a chance to step up, and I'm lookingforward to that.
