WHO, ME? Struggles no reason not to support Cards

After five games, the Ball State football team sits at 1-4. Theyhave been outscored 193-73. They've scored just eight touchdowns --five of which came in one game. Sparkplug running back Larry Bosticis already out for the year after blowing out his knee againstPurdue.

However, all of this is no reason why students should not comeout and go to the game against Eastern Michigan this Saturday.

I don't know where many people at Ball State went to highschool, but I attended a school where Friday's football game meantsomething to about 100 of the roughly 3,000 students at the school. You see, our football team was in a conference that they were waytoo good for, and they obliterated every team they played in theconference. They have not lost a conference game in more than 20years. Therefore, no one really cared about their football games, because as any student in the school would tell you, "They're justgoing to kill [fill in opponent] anyway."

One of the main reasons I looked forward to college was becausein college, I figured, students cared more about the footballgames. I was obviously watching too many big-time college footballgames, however, because I failed to recognize that the students atschools not quite on the highest plane in terms of football mightnot care as much. I hope that this is not the case, but the factthat the student section at the first two games, while loud, wasnot overwhelming, and that worries me, especially considering theywere night games. There's more opportunity to attend.

Like it or not, we are all here at Ball State, and we all shouldcare how a team that represents us fares, and we all should want tosupport that team. This is the case in any sport, but sincefootball is the most mainstream of the sports, it is especiallytrue for that team. The chance to go to a football game for free isnot something that is going to happen to us very often, and anyonewho has that opportunity, even if the team is not doing well, should take advantage of it.

Although the Cards appeared overmatched against more physicallyimposing teams like Purdue, Missouri and Toledo, they have shownflashes of the talent we are seeing more often now thatMid-American conference play is underway. Although some mightdisagree, there is no team remaining on Ball State's schedule thatthey are not capable of beating if they play to their abilities, and we, as Ball State students, should want to see this team have achance to get those wins.

MAC play continues this Saturday against Eastern Michigan, andwill be continuing for the remainder of Ball State's season. Please, if you have nothing to do on Saturday, don't just startlooking for someone who has alcohol, and don't just sit in yourroom complaining about a lack of things going on. If you're notalready busy, you should come support Ball State in a game thatmatters more than the three defeats they suffered earlier thisyear.

It's Homecoming, baby!
