TENNIS: Women successful, men struggle in weekend invites

Men fail to advance past the second round at Regionals

Ball State's men's and women's tennis teams had very polarweekends. While the women's coach Kathy Bull seemed pleased withher team's performance at the Indiana Invitational, men's coachBill Richards was disappointed with his teams play at the ITARegionals in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"(The weekend was) not as well as we hoped," Richards said."It's not as good as the regionals we have had in recent times,over the past few years."

In the main draw, Matt Baccarani and Matt Laramore both fell inthe first round of singles. Baccarani lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 toMichigan's Marko Maravic, while Matt Laramore fell to Chuck Perrinof Northwestern 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).

"The one guy I felt bad for was Matt Laramore," Richards said."He played the best match of all our guys this weekend and lost ina gut-wrencher."

In doubles, Laramore and Brad Rhodes, Klint Knable and PaulNewman lost in the first round, while No. 53 Baccarani and PatrickThompson advanced to round 16 before falling to Ohio State's DrewEberly and Ross Wilson, who advanced to the finals.

In qualifiers, Knable fell in the first round to Sam Davidson ofDePaul. Tony Epkey advanced to the second round before falling toEberly, while Newman lost to Notre Dame's Andrew Roth in the secondround.

"I hope it shows the guys how much work he have to go," Richardssaid. "Hopefully this weekend they'll come out with a greater senseof purpose. We left some players at home who would have liked to bethere and maybe could have done better. We will be evaluating themnext weekend at Milwaukee."

The women, meanwhile, had some some success at the Indiana FallInvitational. In flight 1, the Cardinals struggled, with JenniferPollack going 0-3 and Batter going 1-2 over the weekend.

In flight 2, Stephanie Farrar went on a roll, advancing to thefinals, which was not played due to time.

Haly Calderwood, meanwhile, fell to Xavier's Jackie Villnes inthree sets. Calderwood then scored a victory over XU's AlicaPapa.

Katie Owens, meanwhile, lost the first round to Papa by defaultbefore defeating Nikki Heln of IU in the consultation bracket.

"It went very well," Bull said. "We played a lot of matches, wehad some good performances."

In doubles, Batty and Farrar lost in the first round, but endedup winning the consultation bracket, while Calderwood and Pollackwent 0-3 in doubles.

"We had some good, solid play," Bull said. "It was a good way toend the fall season."
