Student suggests boycott of store during closing

On Thursday, as I read The Star Press, I found a story sodisturbing and sickening that I had to look at the date on thepaper to make sure it was actually 2004. The title was innocent:"Ed's Warehouse shutting down," but when I read why, I found myselfat a loss for words. Let me quote from the story by MichaelMcBride, "MUNCIE - Ed McCloud made good on his word this week.

In the appliance business for 50 years, McCloud had saidconsistently that he would close Ed's Warehouse if the city decidedto rename Broadway." And to confirm what we're all assuming, "Iwould emphasize that I hold the mayor and the black communityresponsible for my closing the store," McCloud said.

While this is a free country, and Mr. McCloud does have theright to operate his business as he sees fit, I am calling on allstudents and members of the Muncie community to boycott his storeduring their closeout. I know the low prices associated with thistype of closing may be tempting, but I beg of you all, DO NOT putyour informal seal of approval on this racism. It may be too lateto change this man, but there is no reason to support himfinancially while he does this. Not only is he practicing blatantracism, but he is going so far as to take jobs away from people tostand firm with his agenda. People like this do not deserve oursupport - especially not financially.
