Student inspired to start own line of T-shirts

Sophomore moved by sociology class to help increase awareness

BSU sophomore Lauren Peak was so taken aback by statistics aboutthe environment that she decided to do something. A sociology classPeak took last year influenced how our life habits affect theworld. She decided to get involved, and she joined an EnvironmentalCommittee. Talking with her roommate at the time, her roommateagreed. "She said, 'They're just not aware,'" which gave Peak thename for a project. "When I realized how bad the environment was, Iwanted people to be aware," she said. A paper she did on adoptionalso inspired her.

The project, an awareness fashion line, is selling T-shirts topromote charity and all issues around the world. Beginning proceedswill go to making the T-shirts; however, Peak's goal is to be ableto comfortably donate to charity and have enough to continue theline at the same time. "I would also like to get to a point wherethere's a lot of people involved in helping," said Peak. Anothergoal of hers is to be able to have pants, different types of shirtsand purses available in the line, along with socks as a joke. "I'mlooking for a level of using celebrity to promote [the line andcause] more," she said about future plans.�

"I want to know how to get things made," she said. "I've writtenscripts, I'm writing a book, but I've never done a clothing linebefore." Peak has designed and created some shirts herself,however, she doesn't find it fair to sell those. Her mother and sheare looking into how to get the T-shirts made back at her hometown.She is also taking a fashion merchandising class to help her learnmore about the process.

The screen-print T-shirts will be available in a variety ofcolors and are short-sleeve. All T-shirt sizes will be available.Peak has designed two T-shirts to be sold - one that says "Aware"across the chest and another similar shirt that says "Aware" withstars underneath. Costs are not final yet, but depending on howmany order shirts, the T-shirts will be around $10each.�

T-shirts are not currently ready for sale; however, Peak istaking orders in advance. To order a T-shirt, anyone can e-mail herat awarelpinfo@aol.com to express their interest. Peak will thencontact those interested to tell them what options are available aswell as what the line is about. Payment is due before the actualdelivery of the T-shirts, and T-shirts will most likely be mailedto the students.�

Peak, a telecommunications major and theater minor, is workingon the project alone so far. Between her acting classes in herhometown, classes here at Ball State and auditions on the weekend,she is fairly busy. The project, however, is one that is importantto her. "It's for a good cause," she said.
