SOFTBALL: Team to complete fall slate at Purdue

This weekend marks the end of the preseason for the Ball Statewomen's softball team as they travel to the Purdue Tournament,where they'll face IUPUI and Purdue.

Two weekends ago, the Cardinals won the IUPUI Tournament with a1-0 win over the University of Indianapolis. Taylor Yancey singledand eventually scored on an RBI double by Abby Gross. Ball Statewent 5-1 during the tournament, its only loss against IUPUI in thesecond game of the weekend.

"I was very happy with how we played; it was very good teamwins," coach Terri Laux said. "It was very nice to see it wasn'tone or two people getting the job done on the offensive side.Everybody stepped up over the weekend, making some big plays."

The tournament run included an extra-inning thriller againstButler that ended with a 5-4 Ball State win in eight innings. BallState, after giving up a run in the sixth, thus sending the gameinto extra innings, fell behind 4-1 in the top of the eighth. Butthe Cardinals answered, with four runs on four hits in the bottomof the inning. Alyssa Huffman scored the game-winning run whenKelli Jeziorski singled.

Much like the IUPUI Tournament, Laux hopes to give her newcomersplaying time, and allow them to play with the returning players.She also said with good pitching and the ability to make criticaldefensive plays, "we're only going to get better."
