OUR VIEW: History does not come easy

AT ISSUE: Like Boston's victory, the most memorable events in life are usually hard earned

No matter if you are a Red Sox fan, Yankees fan or fan ofneither, you have to admit that what Boston was able to accomplishduring this year's American League Championship Series isimpressive.

They did what no Major League Baseball team had ever done byclimbing out of a 0-3 hole to win a seven-game postseason series. But it was more than that.

It was that show of perseverance that we all look for inourselves and admire in each other. And they showed it witheverything flying in their faces, saying it was not meant tobe.

The Red Sox were cursed. Their ace's ankle was exploding. Theironce thunderous bats had suddenly fallen silently. And on top ofthat, they were facing their storied foe: the blessed franchisethat is the New York Yankees.

After Game 3, they were written off by nearly everyone, including many of their fans. Then in Game 4, it WAS over, as thoseboys from Beantown came down to what was expected to be their finalthree outs of the year against Mariano Rivera AKA the greatestcloser in postseason history.

Somehow though, they ended up winning that game. Then the nextone, to force an improbable Game 6. Then that one on the back andbleeding ankle of Curt Schilling to force unprecedented Game 7.And, well, we know how that ended.

There were so many times that they could have cashed it in. Allof the Red Sox were still going to making millions either way. Butthey didn't.

This unbelievable display of determination in the face ofseemingly insurmountable odds in sports, and anywhere else in life,is what makes heroes and history.

The history books don't smile on those whom were given whateverthey got. We, as the collective group that is humanity, celebratessacrifice and guts.

Some may find the Red Sox an imperfect symbol of these things, because "baseball is only a game." But for anyone who finds someredeeming quality in sports, it is hard not to give Boston a tip ofthe cap for displaying a quality that we all hope to possess: anunwavering faith in ourselves
