FROM THE CHEAP SEATS: BSU should start Cole Stinson

Head coach Brady Hoke said the coaching staff will make agame-time decision as to who will start at quarterback at Toledotomorrow. He said the staff was still evaluating on a day-to-daybasis - which is fine.

The decision of going with sophomore Joey Lynch or freshman ColeStinson shouldn't be a rash one.

But since we don't get to see our practice, we get to have morefun saying who should be under center on Ball State's first playfrom scrimmage.

It should be Stinson.

"Cole the Cannon," as some have started to call him, threwpasses with a zip that was widely evident Saturday against WesternMichigan. Just ask ace receiver Dante Ridgeway whose finger wasbent back by one of Stinson's bullets.

Lynch is the more experienced man, Stinson the more physicallyimpressive. Given the meat grinder Ball State faced to start theseason, Lynch was better equipped to have the job. In the seasonopener Lynch was fine, but facing the Purdue and Missouri defenseshe had no time to throw.

When Stinson came in as planned against Western Michigan, hegave the offense a shot in arm... with his own. Given the time tothrow (which he often has, thanks to some tweaks in protectionschemes), Stinson led a vertical passing game, which the Cardsbarely attempted in non-conference play. His 294 yards in less thanfour quarters were 39 more than what Lynch had totaled to thatpoint.

Lynch might have a better overall handle of the offense, butStinson has obviously made huge strides since first coming toMuncie, or else the staff wouldn't have planned to play him at allagainst Western.

Last week was a perfect opportunity to give Stinson extendedtime, and he took advantage. An even matchup, a friendly crowdcheering and a running game to balance the passing.

Stinson admitted afterwards that he still had butterflies in hisstomach. Hopefully the mop-up duty he received at Missouri settledsome of the jitters he will have playing at Toledo.

Hoke says probably both Lynch and Stinson will play, but givingthe nod to Stinson will reap more reward.
