FOOTBALL: Cards' grad rate tops Division 1-A

The NCAA recently released its latest report on footballgraduation rates, and Ball State garnered the top spot among allpublic institutions, fifth overall.

The latest incoming class examined was 1997-98, and anational-best (among Division I-A schools) six Mid-AmericanConference schools topped 70 percent. Ball State led the way at 88percent, tied with Baylor.

The average rate for the six-year graduation window was 62percent, and nine MAC schools topped that.

For players who entered from 1994-97, Ball State again led theconference with a 78 percent graduation rate. Ten of 12 MAC schoolstopped 50 percent.

"This speaks well for our coaches, for (former head coach) BillLynch and his staff," athletics director Bubba Cunningham. It alsospeaks well for our student advising and, of course, thestudent-athletes."

Cunningham said all his coaches talk to prospective playersabout the strong academic setting Ball State provides.

"Obviously you sell what you do well," he said. "Students comehere and they're not surprised what the expectations are."

For players who entered in 1997, Western Michigan (72 percent),Toledo and Kent State (71), Central Michigan and Ohio (70), Akronand Marshall (67) and Bowling Green (63) also topped the nationalaverage.

For the 1994-97 period, Western (68 percent), Toledo (62) andCentral (60) followed Ball State.
