Fair to offer lessons for job searches

Students can get help creating portfolios, resumes, cover letters

The Career Center will have the Job-Search Jump Start Saturdayto help anyone who is looking for internships, full-time jobs orskills for future career. The semiannual event opens from 9 a.m. to1 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall.

James Mitchell, assistant director at the center, recommendsthat students who would like to attend the event registeronline.

The event is designed to help students build job search skills,Mitchell said.

The center will offer several sessions at the event, andstudents can attend which ones they want, Mitchell said.

For students who try to make their portfolios but don't knowhow, portfolio session will be offered, Melisa Beeson, an assistantdirector of the Career Center, said. Beeson, who is in charge ofthe session, will present examples of portfolios that former BallState students made. She has portfolios from different majors toshow, she said.

In her session, Beeson will talk about how to put together aportfolio, what to include in a portfolio and how to use it duringan interview. Beeson said students can gain better and stronger jobsearching skills by learning effective ways to make and present aportfolio.

In the Behavior-Based Interviewing session, participants canlearn how to develop accomplishment statements to use during aninterview, according to the center's Web site. People will alsolearn how to help employers focus on the knowledge, skills andabilities students have.

A Ball State student, who had an internship, will share theexperience in the Internships seminar. The participants willreceive information of finding or even creating their owninternship.

A session called Job-Search Document teach how to prepare aresume, cover letter and even a thank-you note.

Besides those sessions that students typically want to learn,the event's staff members added a new program that they thinkstudents will be interested in, Mitchell said.

"The session called Ready, Set, Serve! is a panel discussionabout people who've served full-time at the Peace Corps and otherprograms," Mitchell said. Representatives of local, state, nationaland international service opportunities attend the session to sharetheir experiences and answer questions.

"It is a job, but it's a lot more than a job," Mitchell said."We just want students to have the opportunity to learn more aboutthe diverse programs."

The Job-Search Jump Start is open to any students and alumni ofthe university, Mitchell said. He expects to have more seniors inthe event, but information that younger students should know isalso provided at the event.

"If they really have more questions after the event, they canschedule an appointment at the Career Center," Beeson said. "TheCareer Center is always here to help students."
