Ball State's cross country team is headed to Toledo with achance to repeat as MAC Champions. The Cardinals, who defeatedToledo 73-78 last year to win their first championship.
The Cardinals, led by Senior Jill Scully, are hoping to repeatthe success they have had this season so far, including a upsetover No. 27 Indiana this weekend.
"We're excited about the opportunity," coach Sue Parks said. "Ithink we feel we're running better than we were at this point lastyear. I think that if we have the best day of our season thisweekend, we have a good of a chance as anyone to win it."
While the Cardinals are defending champions, and only lost oneplayer during the off season, the Cardinals were picked third inthe season preview.
"Sometimes we don't get the respect we should," Parks said."We're excited to be in this position, and we have to execute inthe race."
When playing in major event so far this season, coach Parks hasstressed having the top runners a small amount of positions apart,keeping the gaps small to get as many players in the top spots aspossible.
"I think that if we get the top five runners, our placingrunners in the top 20-25 or so that should be enough to take careof business," she said. "That has been what it takes in the past.If our top five runners do well, especially our top two- JillScully and Sarah Huddleston can do well we'll be in goodshape."
"But if anything we have been stressing keeping the gaps small.If we do that we'll be where we need to be."
Scully will also be in another race -- as the Cardinals toprunner she has a chance to win the individual crown, which she hasdone a couple of times so far this season.
Scully finished second in the championship last year, and theindividual champion, Miami's Andrea Kremer, has graduated.
The women's cross country team was the only Ball State programto win a MAC title last season.
