105 floats make up kick-off parade

Two-hour walk meant to promote unity within the community

Ball State University's homecoming day will kick off at 9:30a.m. Saturday morning. 105 entries from throughout the campus andcommunity will make the two hour trek from Muncie Central HighSchool to the corner of Neely Street and McKinley Avenue.

The parade route will take them south on Walnut Street, West onCharles Street, north on Wheeling Avenue, west on University Avenuethen north on McKinley Avenue.

"It's going to be a great warm-up for the game," SteeringCommittee Parade Chairman Libby Skiles, a junior businessadministration major said. "It will be a wonderful time to show offour BSU spirit."

Skiles said that between 600 to 800 individuals from variousorganizations and businesses from the Muncie area and said that sheexpects a good crowd.

"It's a really good thing to do," Skiles said.

General Chairman Jeff Duerstock, a senior advertising major saysthat the parade is a good opportunity to promote unity within thecity.

"It's an accumulation of student organizations, businesses andvarious parts of the community," Duerstock said.

Duerstock, now in his third year as a part of the SteeringCommittee, said he also hopes there will be a good turnout for theevent.

"It's a great way for the city to show their pride for BallState ... it is an incredible thing to see the community cometogether," he said.

Spark the Spirit, Ball State's Homecoming events program,started Thursday with the Student Scholarship Talent Show andRoyalty Coronation, and will end Monday with the Ashley AwardsPresentation, which will be held at 5 p.m. in the AlumniCenter.

Voting for best float will take place in the Art and Journalismbuilding Monday, with the winner being announced during the AshleyAwards Presentation.
