YOUR TURN: Columnist wrong, Bush policies are murderous

In response to Brett Mock's column, Monday September 13, yourenthusiasm for Bush's unjust and murderous policies in the War onTerror, which he told NBC news is not winnable, is blanketed inbiased, corporate media news statistics. Bush's policieshave resulted in the creation of a detention center in GuantanamoBay, which violated international law and the Geneva Convention. There have been multiple abuse scandals there and in Iraq, which have been brushed off by Donald Rumsfield as not as bad asbeheading someone on television. How can you measuretorture and injustice? The Patriot Act violates manyconstitutional freedoms, and has already been documented as beingused unjustly for government spying.

By defining a "domestic terrorist" the Patriot Act blatantlyseeks to crush dissent. And as a political science major,Mr. Mock, you should know that dissent is not only the right ofpeople in a democracy, it is our responsibility to seek outgovernment corruption, expose it, and change unjust policies suchas Guantanamo Bay and the Patriot Act. We have outragedmost of the Arab world, and have gone against our own doctrines ofthe right to self-determination in occupying Iraq. We havebecome an imperial nation, and defied our own principles and wewonder why the world is so angry at us. And I think it is importantto point out once again, that there was no connection between Iraqand September 11th, or Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida. Bushmay have solidified power after September 11th with the Patriot Actand his secretive policies (he refused to testify publicly or underoath to the 9/11 Commission). However is solidified powerin one person really what this country is all about? Ithought we were a nation of limited government and freedom, government by the people for the people, not an imperial, occupyinggovernment run with nepotism and corporate greed. All Bush has doneto this nation is make it less democratic, the government moresecretive, increased our national deficit to a record-breakingnumber, and moved many jobs overseas to exploit poverty in theworld. There have been multiple stories about the loss ofemployment right here in Indiana and Ohio. The death tollin Iraq has reached over 1000 this week and Newsweek says the warin Iraq is "Worse Than You Think." Bush's policies arenothing to celebrate, and as this election draws nearer I hope allBall State students are informing themselves of this fact, andactively trying to change the course of this administration'sdangerous policies. Remember the ban on assault weapons expired thesame day Brett Mock's column ran. What is Bush doing fornaitonal security? Allowing the gun lobby to sellautomatic, dangerous weapons. Are we any safer today thanwe were on September 11th, 2001?
