WOMEN'S SOCCER Last minute goal gives Cardinals win

Ball State earns first win over Butler, will head to IU Sunday

For a while it looked like Ball State was going to have theirthird 1-0 loss to Butler. In the last ten minutes of play theCardinals were able to score two goals, including one with lessthan one minute remaining.

"It was great for our players," coach Rob Rainey said.

The win was the first for the Cardinals, and brings them to 3-0on the season as they prepare to face Indiana this Sunday.

Despite the Cardinals success against Butler, Rainey feels thatthe team will have to make some improvements in order to competewith the Hoosiers.

"We didn't communicate as well as we could have," he said."Indiana will take advantage of what we gave the Bulldogstoday."

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on the 69th minute when KristinHarnest got the ball into the right side of the net off of aCardinal defender.

Ball State got on the board when Krista Mitts gave Amy Holst theball inside the box and Holst punched the ball into the net to setup the 1-1 tie. The Cardinals then earned a Corner kick, which KateNadalin sent into the box. Gretchen Echelbarger finished the playwith only 30 minutes remaining in the match.

"It's disappointing to play solid soccer for close to 90 minutesagainst a great Ball State team and have two breakdowns on setplays cost you like they did," Butler coach Woody Sherwood said ina Butler Sports press release. "It will be a good test for ouryoung team to see how well they bounce back from this devastatingloss."

The win was the Cardinals first ever victory over Butler inthree previous matchups. The Cards will continue a road trip whenthe head down to Bloomington for a 5 p.m. matchup which Rainey sayswill be harder than their three previous games.

"If we want to compete with Indiana we need to communicatebetter," Rainey said.

The win is the Cardinals third in a row and their secondstraight 2-1 win.

"I'm happy to be off to this start, and I'm looking forward toSunday," Rainey said.
