WOMEN'S GOLF Cardinals to open season at weekend invite

The women's golf team, under first-year coach Katherine Mowat,opens the fall season this weekend at the Notre DameInvitational.

Mowat takes over an experienced bunch -- six upperclassmen andno freshmen -- led by junior Katie Sundberg, who finished 18thindividually at the Mid-American Conference Championships this pastspring. Mowat said the team, which placed sixth in the MAC, islooking for "major improvement."

"This team is already energetic," she said. "But I have goalsand the team has the same goals, and we are going to try toaccomplish those goals. We just need to stay focused."

Besides Sundberg, also returning are sophomore Chelsie Flannery,Lindsay LaRocco and sophomores Carmen Bodine and Ali Meyer.Flannery was 24th in the MAC, and LaRocca is the team's lonesenior.

In addition, Julie Harder transferred in from Nebraska, andMowat said the junior will be in Saturday's starting lineup.

The Notre Dame Invitational is the first of four fall meets forthe Cards. Next weekend they will play host to the Cardinal Classicat the Players Club in Yorktown. Also on tap are meets at EasternKentucky and Florida International.
