The top 20 finalists for Homecoming King and court andHomecoming Queen and court will be announced at the HomecomingRoyalty Fashion Show tonight at Pruis Hall.
The approximately 90 candidates for homecoming court will takethe stage in a variety of costumes that they designed, MelissaKish, royalty fashion show chairwoman for the Homecoming SteeringCommittee, said. To keep the show in good taste, Kish had toapprove each candidate's costume, she said.
The top 20 finalists for Homecoming Court, 10 for the King'sside and 10 for the Queen's side, will be revealed after the show,as determined by the online voting that took place from Sept. 13 toFriday.
This year there were 700 more votes submitted than last year,Kish said.
"I'd love to say it was me, but it was the candidates that gotthe votes this year," Kish said. "They really took it uponthemselves to get the word out and get people to vote."
Candidates had to spend two hours promoting themselves to BallState students, Kish said. Many people made flyers, and onecandidate donned a cow costume to try and attract votes.
In order to participate in the competition for Homecoming Court, candidates had to be nominated by a student organization and thenpay an entry fee, which the organization they are affiliated withusually pays.
"A person could sponsor themselves, but it's pretty much justpaying to get in," Kish said.
While the fashion show is a great way for candidates to promotetheir organizations, it has no bearing on who is chosen to be onthe Homecoming Court.
"It's the fun thing. This way everybody at least gets toparticipate in at least one thing," Kish said. None of thecandidates will know who made it to be a finalist until the namesare announced when the show is over.
The finalists will then attend a dinner and be interviewed by apanel of judges made up of Ball State faculty and staff. Judgeswill look for things such as how the candidate has been promotingHomecoming and how they represent their student organization, Kishsaid.
Of the 10 finalists for each side of the court, one king andqueen will be chosen as well as four members for each court, Kishsaid. The court will be coronated at the talent show Oct. 7 inEmens Auditorium.
The fashion show starts at 7 p.m. in Pruis Hall, but doors willopen at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $1, and all proceeds go towardsfunding Homecoming week, which lasts from Oct. 4 to Oct. 9.
