A weekend trip to Western Michigan and Northern Illinoisproduced mundane results for Ball State on Friday and Sunday.
The Cardinals (4-1-3 overall, 0-1-3 Mid-American Conference)suffered their first loss of the season on Friday when they fell toWestern Michigan, 1-0. Sunday, the Cardinals tied NIU, 1-1, indouble overtime.
Western Michigan's Laura White scored in the 75th minute whendefender Val McIntyre sent a long service from the left side in thebox at the far post. White then got around Cardinal goalkeeperAlison Becker and put the ball in the net, allowing the Broncos tocontinue their five-game winning streak.
"It was a good hustle goal on their part," coach Ron Raineysaid.
Ball State's best scoring chance came on a penalty kick by DanaCharlesworth following a foul at the upper right corner of the box.Kate Perz stopped the shot, one of her four shot-on-goal saves.Overall, the Cardinals outshot Western Michigan, 8-7.
Against Northern Illinois, the Cardinals allowed the first goalof the game less than 10 minutes in when Beth Matius scored off aChristie Ehrhardt header. Kate Nadalin responded just past thehalfway mark of the period with an unassisted goal on a cornerkick, tying the game.
"If we can only give up one goal a game, that's not bad," Raineysaid.
Although Ball State dominated in shots, 25-11, including an 18-6advantage in the second half and the two overtimes, the teamcouldn't take advantage its chances.
"We missed some opportunities in the second half that I wish wecould have capitalized on," Rainey said.
Star forward Dee Nocero sat out the entire game against Westernbut came off the bench against Northern Illinois. Against Northernshe took five shots, including two on goal. She continues torecover from an aggravated back injury suffered against EasternMichigan on Sept. 10th.
With the tie, the Huskies now have a seven-game undefeatedstreak, their longest such run in the program's 12-year history.The previous undefeated streak was six, in 1998.
