Along with inaugurating a new vice president, the StudentGovernment Association announced several changes and plans at itsfirst meeting Wednesday.
Sen. Katie Carlson nominated Sen. Steve Geraci for the presidentpro tempore position after Michael Piercefield was sworn in as SGAvice president. Piercefield left the position of president protempore after Olufunmbi Elemo resigned as vice president.
Geraci said his experience in university governance qualifiedhim. Along with his position on SGA, Geraci serves on the Studentand Campus Life Council in University Senate.
Geraci was the only person nominated for the position.
"I really don't feel good about that," Geraci said.
Another person should run so senators can pick the best man forthe job and preserve the democratic tradition, he said.
Senators can still make a nomination at the Sept. 8 meetingbefore SGA votes.
Also at the meeting, Ben Tietz, SGA president, reinstated thecosponsorship fund cut last year. Tietz said the administration wasable to budget $12,000 to spend helping other organizations fundprograms.
Jayson Manship, former SGA president, cut the fund lastSeptember because SGA had a budget deficit. Manship insteadprovided organizations with money for advertising.
"The advertising didn't work very well," Tietz said. "There wasa ridiculous amount of money left over."
Tietz said he felt the fund was an assistance SGA should provideto students.
"I think SGA represents the entire student body, and I think SGAneeds to give something back," Tietz said.
Brittny Smith, Black Student Association president, said shethought the fund was a good idea because some organizations arelimited to what they can draw from their accounts.
Elizabeth Douglass, Asian American Student Association, alsosaid she supported the fund because it helps organizations to workwith SGA.
"If you cosponsor, you'd think big things would happen,"Douglass said.
Tietz also announced dates for campus forums he will conduct. The forums are a chance for students to ask Tietz and the SGAexecutive board questions.
