Senator fills president pro tempore post

Steve Geraci: 'My biggest strength is the desire to fight for students.'

Running unopposed, Steve Geraci won the position of presidentpro tempore for Student Government Association.

The senate elected Geraci, a sophomore political science major,to fill the position left open by Michael Piercefield. Piercefieldwas sworn in Sept. 1 as SGA vice president. Olufunmbi Elemo, formerSGA vice president, resigned in August after Muncie police citedher in April for underage drinking.

Geraci ran for the position in April but lost toPiercefield.

Though Geraci did not face opposition, some senators tried tonominate challengers.

Sen. Liz Stephan nominated Sen. Jason Blevins at the meetingWednesday, but Blevins did not accept because he is a residentassistant, he said.

"I would have loved to accept," Blevins said.

Stephan said she would have liked to have had someone runagainst Geraci.

"It would be nice to have multiple choices," she said.

Stephan nominated Blevins because of his knowledge of SGA, shesaid.

Now that he has been elected, Geraci wants to focus on answeringany questions senators might have and working on getting thestudent opinion heard, he said.

"My goal is to really stick up for student views in UniversitySenate," Geraci said. "My biggest strength is the desire to fightfor students."

Geraci referred to legislation passed in the spring that movedthe date of Spring Break to the last full week of March, which hesaid passed without student knowledge of it.

Geraci hopes to avoid a similar situation, he said, and wants topush legislation pertinent to students through University Senatethat has been in committee for some time, including a proposal toend Saturday finals.

The elimination of Saturday finals has sat in the AcademicPolicies Council since March 2003.

Geraci said he did not see a problem in working with facultymembers and professional personnel in University Senate to pushforward the legislation.

"In that room, you're peers," he said. "It's a matter ofsticking to your guns."
