Proposal to create meter spots on streets surrounding Ball State

The Muncie City Council voted to introduce an ordinance thatwould create metered parking on streets around Ball StateUniversity.

Parking on Riverside Avenue by Christy Woods, University Avenuefrom the Administration Building to Tillotson Avenue and on NewYork and Neely avenues by the Studebaker Complex is free.

The city should be able to profit from the commuters who parkthere, Mayor Dan Canan said.

The city would install meters that could last from two to fourhours, or even longer, he said.

Jayson Manship, former Student Government Association president, told the council he understood the city would want to meter thestreets but asked that the meters would last long enough forstudents in class.

Canan said the meters would probably cost about 25 cents anhour, and if they were all occupied about 50 percent of the time, the city would make $70,000 a year.

The city does not have the money to install the 238 spaces atonce, Canan said, so the city would install the meters in stages. The city would start with University Avenue and then the streets byStudebaker.
