OUR VIEW: First things first

AT ISSUE: Debates, candidates and issues matter; but you have to register first

Nov. 2 is a very important date this year: its election day.

That is, of course, if you keep in mind Oct. 4.

That day, this coming Monday for those of you keeping tabs, isthe deadline for eligible Indiana citizens to register to vote.

So, if you are a citizen of the U.S., not currently in prisonand 18 years of age; chances are you should be registering (or havealready registered) to vote.

You do not have to declare a party, and to be honest, you reallydo not even HAVE *ITALICS* to vote come election day.

You may not have an opinion RIGHT NOW *ITALICS*, but you neverknow who will say or do something between now and Nov. 2 that couldquickly make you have one.

Sure, the issues, the candidates and the mudslinging matter; butnot right now. In order for those items to matter, you have to havea vote.

And you don't get a vote if you do not register.

What a catch ...

Voter registration is easy: print or pick-up a one-page form, fill it out, attach your proof of address (as simple as a copy of adriver's license) and mail or turn back in the form.

In the time it will take you to read this page, you couldregister to vote.

So, put down this paper, skip the crossword for a day and gograb a registration form at the county clerk's office or, eveneasier, www.in.gov/sos.

Now that you know how, there is just one final thing toremember.

Oct. 4.
