AT ISSUE: Donald Kuratko may be leaving, but his lessons and leadership will carry on

It was announced yesterday that Donald Kuratko, director of BallState's award-winning and nationally recognized entrepreneurship,is leaving for Bloomington.

He has a lot to look forward to, and we sincerely wish him thebest of luck.

After 21 years, Kuratko is departing to take over as theexecutive director for Indiana University's Johnson Center forEntrepreneurship and Innovation. Come Jan. 1, Kuratko will be gone, but we, along with many faculty and staff, believe his lessons andleadership will live on.

Kuratko started Ball State's entrepreneurship program in 1983,and ever since then the program has gained nothing but support andstrength. Numerous awards and honors later, Ball State's program isfirst among public universities (according to a 2004 report in U.S.News and World Report) and the school has Kuratko to thank for alrge part of its success.

Miller College of Business dean Lynne Richardson said thatKuratko wanted to work for a top 20 business school; he will be,and he is deserving of it.

Part of business itself, let alone the education that supportsit, is about cutting losses and knowing when to move on. Althoughleaving Ball State certainly shouldn't be considered "loss-cutting"for Kuratko, the advancement and opportunities awaiting him at IUare certainly worthy of moving on.

Although he will be missed, Kuratko's shoes are not too large tofill. As President Jo Ann Gora said in a letter Tuesday, "That's anachievement we absolutely plan to build upon, and we willaggressively search for the right person to carry this nationallyrenowned program forward."

We wish her and the department the best of luck on the searchthat lies ahead.
