After completing a fairly successful spring by finishing fourthin the Mid-American Conference Championship, the men's golf teamwill look to continue its strong play into the fall season.
The Cardinals kick off the 2004 fall season Saturday at theMichigan Intercollegiate at Radrick Farms Golf Course in Ann Arbor,Mich.
In addition to the fourth-place showing at the MACChampionships, the Cards finished fifth or better in three othertournaments in the spring 2004 season.
The list of returning players is the same as the spring season,which featured no seniors. The fall season line-up features threeseniors, three juniors and five sophomores.
The deep sophomore class is led by C.D. Hockersmith who wasnamed the 2003-04 Most Valuable Player by team members. Hockersmithled the Cardinals in scoring average (74.48) and fired acareer-best 68 in the final round of the MAC Championships.
Hockersmith is joined by fellow classmate Wayne Denger, who alsoshot a career-best 68 in the spring at the First Energy CollegiateClassic.
The senior class of Bud Graessle, Lance Scholl and Mike Kasulawill look to provide leadership. Scholl was in the top five formost of the spring season and Grassele and Kasula will look tobreak into the lineup more often this year.
The junior class is led by Patrick Wilkes-Krier and BrandonBoomsma. Wilkes-Krier was second in the overall scoring average at74.71, while Boomsma was the low man in the fall (72.75).
Rounding out the roster for the Cards is junior Ryan Hungate andsophomores Kyle Cox, Andy Skillman and Austin Steele.
Although the team will be more experienced this season, theplayers will be unfamiliar with most of the courses that they willplay. Radrick Farms is Wilkes-Krier's home course, but all of thetournaments feature golf courses that will be the first time thatBall State has competed on in tournament play.
Even the tournament that the Cardinals host in Oct. 4-5, theEarl Yestingsmeier Invitational, will be held at a new course. Themeet, previously held at the Players Club, will be played at theDelaware Country Club.
