FOOTBALL: Decision yet to be made on starting quarterback for Toledo matchup

Ridgeway named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week

Who will start as quarterback Saturday at Toledo remains aquestion to everyone after Monday. Head coach Brady Hoke said adecision will come in the next few days.

In the meantime, both sophomore Joey Lynch and true freshmanCole Stinson will take snaps with the No. 1 offense inpractice.

"We're still meeting, and we could go through the week making adecision," Hoke said. "It will depend on our plan offensively andwhat's best for the program. You want to evaluate every day, andsee who has the best ability to help your game plan."

Lynch, the only quarterback with game experience entering theseason, has started each game. Stinson, as planned, entered aftertwo offensive series against Western Michigan. Those two seriesnetted -3 yards.

Stinson's strong performance, however, was a pleasant surprise-- too pleasant to take him out. The freshman passed for 294 yardsand three touchdowns on 17-of-31 passing.

Originally targeted to redshirt this season, Stinson waselevated to No. 2 quarterback when redshirt freshman Casey Gillenseparated his shoulder at Purdue. Stinson saw mop-up duty the nextweek at Missouri.

Lynch has completed 59 percent of his passes for 265 yards, withone TD and no interceptions. In the season opener against BostonCollege, he completed 19 of 32 for 147 yards.

"They're both very talented," Hoke said. "They both have a greatwork ethic and are great competitors.

"I know every time Cole came off the field, Joe was one of thefirst to greet him and told him what he saw. He's always a coach onthe field, and that's a big plus."

Hoke added that regardless of who starts, it is quite possibleboth will play against the Rockets.

Like last season, when fifth-year seniors Andy Roesch andTalmadge Hill were virtual co-starters, Hoke feels that Lynch andStinson have handled the situation well.

"They understand that any decision is made for the best of theprogram," he said. "Not for an individual, not for me, not for thealumni, not for the athletics director."
