CROSS COUNTRY: Cards dominate Butler Invite again

Ball State's cross country season began in much the same way asit did last year, with Jill Scully winning the Butler Invitationalonce again. She led a brigade of Cardinals down the stretch, including the top five positions.

Sarah Huddleston, Rose Lehe, Nicole Hartford, and Helen Kirbyfollowed Scully across the line, leading the team to a score of 15,the lowest possible, in the three-team invitational. Butler (52)and IPFW (58) followed.

Last year Huddleston finished second as well, while Leheimproved from a fifth-place finish to third. On the other hand,Amanda Ponsot, who finished eighth at the invite last year, fell to15th this year.

The three remaining Cardinals took places 17th and below. Thelarge division between packs is cause for some concern by headcoach Sue Parks.

"There was a big separation between the top five and the rest ofthe team," Parks said. "That is something we're going to workon."

Scully once again led the way for the Cardinals, the eighth timeout of the last nine races that she was the team's top finisher.Scully should once again compete in the Mid-American Conference, according to Parks.

"She has improved from last year, which is something you alwayslike to see," she said.

"She finished second in the MAC last year, so obviously sheshould be a competitior. We are going to start out with some meetsshe can win and then we will move on to some tougher competitionand we'll see how she stacks up."

Scully was also named the Mid-American Conference's Women'sRunner of the Week following her victory.

The women move on to the Indiana University Open in Bloomingtonthis weekend.
