BSU has first Four Square event

Donations from tournament benefit Boys and Girls Club

After three years of playing in the pit outside of Bracken Library, four square will become a tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday, where anybody can play until midnight.

Registration for the event starts at 5 p.m. and anyone can play for $2. Donations will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie.

Carl Frost, leader of the four square event, said he expects 600 people to attend. Frost started playing four square with junior Dan Oblon and knew it would one day be at this level, he said.

"I knew it [would be this big] and this isn't anything yet," Frost said. "This is a taste of the feast that's yet to come. Eventually, it will be bigger than Thanksgiving."

The event is sponsored by The Revolution, a campus Christian organization, and costs $1,000.

Local businesses, such as Dragon Slayer, Carter's, Greek's Pizzeria, Johnny Carino's and Arby's, will donate prizes. The winner of the tournament will win two Colts-Jaguars tickets and a $100 gift certificate to Ruth's Chris Steak House.

The tournament is for beginners and veterans of four square. The rules will be projected on a wall of Pruis Hall.

"The rules are simple enough that five- and six-year-olds play it regularly, so it can't be that hard," Frost said.

Two veteran four square players will referee the event to make sure there is no foul play.

At the event, six hip-hop groups will perform. Students can also enjoy double-dutch, a step show and Greek's pizza for $2 a slice, Frost said.

Anyone can come to the event, play four-square, listen and watch the other acts or donate freely to the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie.

"This year we are just trying to pull off the event," Frost said. "Hopefully next year, we can get university funding."

Students that are up for a four square challenge can find "Arms," the current four square master that Frost said is the one to beat besides himself and Oblon.

"This could be your greatest adventure or your biggest regret," Frost said. "Four square is life."
