Ball State outclassed across the board

WEST LAFAYETTE -- From the first play of the game it wasapparent Ball State was outmatched by Purdue. Dorien Bryant'sreturning the kickoff for 53 yards was just a sign of things tocome for the Cardinals.

Both Boilermaker units were faster, stronger and more athleticthan the Cards, leading to a statistical advantage in everycatagory.

"I think they're very talented," coach Brady Hoke said, "[Purduecoach Joe Tiller]'s done a good job of recruiting, and even thoughthose kids are young, they're talented guys."

The Boilermakers passed for 368 yards to nine receivers. Fivereceivers caught for more than 40 yards, but none caught more thanfive passes.

"I think we covered well most of the game," sophomore cornerbackRandall Means said. "We didn't hold our coverage long enough, so wekind of gave up and we slacked up a little bit."

Taylor Stubblefield led Purdue with five catches for 88 yardsand three touchdowns.

"I think he's very talented, he runs great routes," Hoke said."I thought Randell Means twice had pretty good coverage on him andthey passed the ball well, and he made the play."

"I think he ran good routes," Means said. "I don't think he wasfaster or slower, I think he ran good routes."

Quarterback Kyle Orton was precise when passing, completing 23of 26 for 329 yards. His 88.5 percent completion rate broke theschool record of 86.4 percent by Bob Griese against Notre Dame in1965.

It wasn't just the offense that outperformed the Cardinals. Thedefense recorded five sacks and held the Cardinals to just 197yards -- 71 rushing and 126 passing.

"We're a young football team," Hoke said. "Those kids were justbetter. I don't know if it's necessarily their speed, just thetalent of the football team."
