WOMEN'S TENNIS Cards add new players from U.S., Austrailia

Coach Bull says additions should make immediate impact

Four women from various locations around the globe will join thewomen's tennis team for 2004.

"We have four women that are going to join our team for 2004,"coach Kathy Bull said. "We have one Indianapolis - Carmel, one fromMemphis, one from Phoenix, and one from Sydney, Australia. Weexpect all four of them to grab starting positions and hold ontothem for quite some time."

Allison Thompson, sister of current team member JessicaThompson, is the lone Hoosier addition to the team.

"[She is] Jessica's sister, so she comes from a great tennisfamily," Bull said. "She's got a solid doubles game, and we havebig, high hopes from another Thompson."

The second addition to the team is Jennifer Pollack, who hailsfrom Memphis, Tenn.

"I actually saw Jennifer at a tournament I work at in Memphis,"Bull said. "She's one of these really talented girls from theSouth."

Stephanie Ferrar, the third American recruit, hails fromPhoenix.

"She is a very nice addition," Bull said. "She is an aggressivebaseliner and another really good, solid doubles player."

The final addition, Haly Calderwood, comes from beyond thePacific Ocean, and continues the women's tennis team's long historyof international recruiting.

"She is from a very athletic family," Bull said. "She looks tohave an extremely strong solid game. She's coming off a 6-8 monthhiatus due to the difference in school systems, but we have highexpectations for Haly."

The four replacements look to fill the shoes of Melissa Roach,Susan Kelley and Jill Wieman, who all left after the 2004 season.They comprised half of the starting singles players.

Returning starters from last year include Jessica Thompson, whohas an 18-14 overall singles record last year, Katie Owens, whoheld a 16-16 doubles record and played in the No. 1 position indoubles with Roach to a 16-15 record, and Jenny Batty, who held a14-17 singles record in 2004.

Coach Bull said that she is pleased with the additions and looksforward to seeing the team in action.
