After Shelley Sanders was selected to revive a Ball State women's golf program in 2000, she resigned this summer and Katherine Mowat has been named the new head coach.

She is the sixth coach in the program's history, that first began in 1974 but was discontinued in 1982 until it was revived by Sanders in 2000.

Mowat was previously an assistant at the University of Mississippi and helped that team make NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004, something she wants to eventually help the Cardinals do.

"They're still in the building stage where they can definitely be established into being one of the top contenders in the conference," Mowat said. "I like the conference, I think the MAC's a good conference and it's a conference where a Division 1 women's golf team has done well in the past."

The first thing Mowat will do to get the program to a high level is recruit strong golfers. She has had experience recruiting at some major tournaments and also plans to tap into her native country of Canada to get recruits, she said.

While Mowat is aiming to bring in some good players, she said she is still fortunate to have inherited the talent she did on the current team.

Mowat is trying to finalize a schedule for her team that will challenge them with stronger teams and stronger conferences.

"I would just love for our team to have experience playing with some of the top teams," Mowat said. "Just to be up there in that competitive mode with some Big Ten teams and some Big 12 teams. I think that would really step up our competitive edge a little bit."

Since her appointment to the position did not begin until August 2, Mowat has only meet three of the players, but expects they will all be ready to play the first week of school since the season starts Labor Day weekend.

Mowat will spend the first part of the fall season acquainting herself with the team.

"I need to kind of get a feel for what they do and how they operate and implement practice plans as best I can to help them," Mowat said.

Without knowing much about the team Mowat said a finish in the top three at the MAC during the spring season is feasible. She also hopes next year or the year after that that the team will have really established themselves.

"I'm just very excited to be here, I'm excited about the process and I'm excited about he possibilities this team has," Mowat said.
