MUDDY SHOELACES: Fads can teach valuable lessons, popular or not

"Fads come and go, but fashion lasts." My stepmother told methat when I asked the difference between fads and fashion about 18years ago. Well, the fad (or trend to some) of pants hanging offthe butts of boys has lasted a little too long for my taste. Iguess I just don't get why someone wants to walk around holding uphis pants in the front while having his butt (fortunately coveredby boxers) hang out. Or in some cases, the whole waist of the jeansis around the knees. Doesn't that make it hard to walk?

Another fad/trend that makes me curious is the words on the buttof shorts, often worn by girls. I know many people don't mindlooking at a cute butt (myself included), but it seems odd that onewould want to draw attention there intentionally. Of course, thatmay be my point of view because I don't like my butt. However, takeinto consideration that one or two letters on these shorts may notbe completely visible, thus changing the meaning of the wordprinted. For instance, if there is a fraternity or sorority withthe letters, "B E B" and the E is not visible, that just leaves thetwo B's, one on one cheek and one on the other. Use yourimagination. There are certainly other examples, but we'll just usethe one for now.

Will I be writing about butts all the time? No. I just happenedto walk by a few people on my way to write this that made me thinkabout these things. I also don't lose sleep worrying about guys whowear their jeans around their knees or girls that draw attention totheir butts with words. These are just things I wanted to ask thegeneral population why.

On the other hand, I love novelty tees. I bought a few from theDiscount Den over the summer that my friends think are hilarious. Igave one to a friend that says, "I'm not f*#!ing stupid, but I usedto." Very funny, and really describes my friend's ex. However, ifyou wear a novelty tee, don't get upset if someone is reading it.Or any other shirt that has writing for people to read, for thatmatter. There has been more than once when I have been readingsomeone's shirt and that person has looked at me and said, "Whatare you staring at?" Um, hello? Stay calm, my eyes are not going tohurt you.

I guess the overall message is if you wear something you knowwill draw attention, don't be defensive when you get the attention.I'm actually a very open-minded and funny person, but there aresome things that just need mentioned.

I think there is enough political talk going on that I can writeabout something random.
