Students interested in becoming community aides for theUniversity Apartments can now apply for the 2004 to 2005 academicyear.
Community aides, similar to resident assistants in the residencehalls, perform a variety of tasks that promote building community,Sally Farber, assistant director for Housing and Residence Life forUniversity Apartments, said
One of the activities to encourage community in the apartmentsis a newsletter. Throughout the school year, community aidesproduce a newsletter that they write articles for and thendistribute to the residents in the apartments. Other activities areleft to the community aides, Farber said.
"I think the community aides are supposed to help when needed,"Eric Johnson, a sixth-year student at Ball State living in theUniversity Apartments, said. "They could help if you get locked outand the University Apartment Office is closed."
Being a community aide is generally a year-long commitment andpotential applicants for the position must meet severalqualifications.
"Community aides must live in the University Apartments, theymust be a student at Ball State and they must have good standingwith the school," Farber said.
Applications for the community aide positions can be picked upat the University Apartment Office and must be returned to Farberby Friday.
After the initial application, there are interviews for thepositions. Unlike becoming a resident assistant, there is not aclass required to become a community aide for the UniversityApartments, only the application and interview process.
The current community aides for the University Apartments arepart of the interview process for potential new community aides,Farber said.
Though the community aides and resident assistants are similar, there are some differences, mainly in the number ofresponsibilities the community aides have.
"Being a community aide is a lot less intense," Farber said."They have fewer responsibilities, there are fewer apartments intheir court yard. The students living in the University Apartmentsdon't need as much as the students in the dorms. The communityaides are just as important as resident assistants, they just havedifferent roles."
