To cater to students' technological and research needs, Bracken Library has added new technology and extended its hours, the dean of University Libraries said.
Bracken Library is now equipped with 10 Gateway laptops, as well as 10 iBooks, both of which are available for student loan at four-hour increments.
Arthur Hafner, dean of University Libraries, said he estimated the cost of all the new technology at $45,000, which was obtained by the $272 student technology fees.
"We are trying to build a strong academic community that caters to the students' technological needs," Hafner said.
Hafner said 10 additional Gateway laptops would be available for student loan in the coming months.
The library is now open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, because of recommendations made by the student body, as well as student senators, he said.
"Our mission is to help students be successful," Hafner said. "If students have an idea or a new thought on the library, they should get in touch."
Students should use the suggestion section of the library's Web site, Hafner said, as all suggestions go directly to him.
Although academics and multi-media are an integral part of the library, they are not the only part, Hafner said. Monthly music performances take place at the library's south entrance.
"The library is a place to see and be seen," Hafner said. "We want students to have a vehicle outside of class where, if they feel obliged, they can express themselves."
Hafner said he is pondering an idea of monthly one-act plays at the library.
When walking around the library, students might also notice some differences. The study section in the northeast corner of the first floor no longer has barren-brick walls. Instead, student artwork hangs on display.
"It just makes the whole place look more lively," Matt Haas, junior, said.
Haas also said he thought the study areas were more user-friendly, as computers are located in each sector.
Bracken Library also added Media Finder, which is a search engine that makes it easier for students using CardCat to find movies and music, Hafner said.
Hafner stressed the importance of Bracken Library being student-oriented. The library produces the monthly newsletter The Library Insider, he said, which can put students and faculty on the same level as the library staff in regards to new technologies and events at the library.
