OLYMPIC TRACK AND FIELD Former BSU athlete qualifies for finals

Former Ball State track and field athlete Zach Riley qualified for the hammer throw finals at the U.S. Olympic team trials on Saturday.

Riley competed in a field of 24 athletes and had the 11th best throw of 223 feet, 8 inches. The top 12 move on to the finals, which will be held on Monday, with the top three being named to the Olympic team.

A.G. Kruger and James Parker lead the pack going into the finals after they both completed throws of 241 feet, 11 inches and 240 feet, 3 inches. The next best throw on qualifying day was 229 feet, 7 inches.

Riley's career best mark is 232 feet, 6 inches which he threw on June 27 at the Big Red National Invitational while competing with the Indiana Invaders, a professional track and field team.
