Summer events bring 10,000 guests to college

Conferences allow university to continue to pay workers

Ball State University will welcome more than 10,000 students participating in more than 65 different conferences and events during the next few months of summer.

Rita Stewart, director of Conferences and Special Events, said that having so many conferences at Ball States lets people continue to work at the university and keeps the residence halls and dining services open and in use during the summer.

"We accommodate them by providing space that is not normally used by the university for the summer" Stewart said.

There are a variety of conferences taking place at Ball State ranging from athletic camps, leadership seminars, music conferences and summer educational programs.

One of the international conferences at Ball State is the Aria International Summer Academy. The Aria conference will be held from June 27 to July 24.

"It is an intensive program for music training for high school and college students from around the world" Mehi Tetel, associate professor of Music Performance and director of the Aria conference, said.

Students range in age from 14 to 32 and come from Australia, Italy, Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and the United States.

A new conference coming to Ball State this summer will be the conference for the Indiana Association for Career and Technical Education being held July 25 through July 27th.

Janene Dawes, Executive Director of ACTE, said she is glad to be able to hold their conference out of a hotel setting and in a place where the technological opportunities are at their fingertips. During the ACTE conference, they will showcase Ball State and hold technology education training in the laboratories for professionals in secondary and postsecondary education.

Stewart said that as students go though conferences, there are a variety of activities here in Muncie that they can take part in. There are recreational facilities, golf courses, the Minnetrista Cultural Center, shopping centers and community festivals throughout the summer.

"Ball State welcomes them with open arms" Stewart said.
