Walking through campus, there are several young faces. Not only incoming freshmen going through orientation, but also kids coming to day camp at the University litter the campus.
Cardinal Kids Camp invites children of the faculty and from the community to come to Ball State. Nearly 150 kids from kindergarden to eighth-grade come to campus and participate in a number of activities, including arts and crafts, swimming, and games of the mind.
"We're a non-competitive [camp]. We don't focus as much on competition or sports but more on inclusionary events that get everyone involved," Camp Cordinator Jim Jamriska said.
The camp began on June 1 and runs until August 6. It begins at 8:15 a.m. and runs until 4:15 p.m. although there are early and late sessions available.
"The kids love swimming, they swim every day," Jamriska said. "They also enjoy arts and crafts program and spread, where the counselors are just there to supervise and the kids choose the activities. It's kind of a recess type activity."
Kim Rottet, a member of the administrator staff, says that Arts and Crafts are the childrens' favorite activities.
"They really enjoy making a mess in the arts and crafts stuff," she said. "They find it is very gooey stuff, and the love gooey stuff."
This week, counselors will be wearing weird clothes all week long. The following week will be one of three water weeks. During those weeks activities will be structered around water.
One of the major activities occurs during the week of July 19. Campers will participate in the annual talent show.
"It can be anything from singing a song to sports exposition, like soccer dribbling or a basketball drill, or skits from popular movies," Hamriska said about the performances. "The kids love to sing songs though, that's the main thing."
The camp isn't just for children, however.
"When I get frustrated, I can go outside and play with the kids for a few minutes," Rottet said. "It's a nice break."
