MEN'S VOLLEYBALL Four recruits sign; three from Illinois

The Ball State men's volleyball team has signed four recruits, including three Illinois high school standouts.

Matthew McCarthy, Dan Buerhing and Mark Termion, were all named to the Chicago Sun-Times 2004 All-Area boys volleyball first team. They are also members of the Chicago Area Sports Performance 18-1 team, which recently won the Asics Junior Nationals.

Matthew McCarthy helped lead Wheaton Warrenville High School to an Illinois State Championship. He is currently on the USA Junior National training team that is in Lake Placid, New York this summer. With 18 members, the team will have to cut six before competing in the Norseca Tournament August 3-8.

As a 6-4 setter, Dan Buerhing comes to Ball State after setting a Naperville Central High School record for assists with 68 in a match. Prior to his senior season he had 951 assists in his 78 games. He has also shown some versatility by posting 27 aces, 136 blocks, 123 digs, 145 kills and a .445 hitting percentage prior to his senior season.

Mark Termion was coached at Wheaton North High school by Ball State men's volleyball alumnus Dave Bayer. During his sophomore year, Termion helped his junior varsity team win the conference championship.

The fourth recruit, Ryan Clarke, a 6-4 1/2 middle blocker, comes to Ball State after playing for the Missouri Thunder volleyball club. He lettered in volleyball at Parkway South High School and also had three letters in basketball.
