MEN'S GOLF Cardinal invited to amateur championship

Men's golf member C.D. Hockersmith has been invited to compete in the 104th North and South Amateur Championship held June 29 - July 4.

Hockersmith is just the third golfer from Ball State to be invited to the event that is held at the Pinehurst No. 2 golf course.

Among those three, Darrett Brinker was the most successful. He won five of six matches at the championship and was even after 15 holes in the final 18, but ended up falling to eventual champion Duane Bock in 1992.

The event first began in 1901 and is the longest consecutive running championship in the country. A total number of 144 contestants will qualify for the event which consists of six rounds of match play.

Many collegiate players have begun their careers by participating in the Championship, including Arnold Palmer of Wake Forest University. Past winners of the event include Jack Nicklaus and Davis Love III.

Hockersmith recently completed his freshman season with a ninth place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships where he shot a career-low round of 68.
