Women compete at intrastate rival after two week hiatus

Serving as a precursor to a later meet, the Ball State women'strack and field team will travel to Notre Dame Saturday for theNotre Dame Open in its second meet of the outdoor season.

"It's mostly a developmental meet in preparation for the(Mid-American Conference) schools the week after. Some of our toppeople aren't even going to compete," head coach Sue Parkssaid.

The team will follow its meet at Notre Dame with the MiamiInvitational on April 10, which will include several otherparticipating MAC schools.

Coming off a performance at the Florida State Relays withseveral personal best marks, the team took a two-week break fortraining in preparation for the remainder of the outdoorseason.

"We've had a good stretch of training to get into the swing ofthe outdoor season. We've gotten a few weeks of really goodtraining," Parks said.

In Florida, sophomore Crystal Winfrey's time of 54.65 seconds inthe 400-meter dash was the second-best time in school history.

Winfrey also participated on the 4x200 relay team that finishedfourth at 1:38.51, just 0.44 seconds behind third-place Universityof Michigan.

Putting up a personal-best time of 17:02.39, sophomore JillScully placed second in the 5,000-meter run, behind a noncollegiateparticipant.

"We got a lot out of (going to Florida). It was great weatherand competition in all areas and different teams we never get tosee," Parks said.

The FSU Relays marked the first time this year the team competedin the javelin, an event only offered during the outdoorseason.

Competing in the event were freshman Karmen Mabry and juniorHolly Flittner, who also compete in the shot put and weight throw,respectively.

However, in Florida, both fouled and did not place in the event.The two will get a chance at improvement, though, as the Cardinalsresume their outdoor season at 10 a.m.
