Tenth annual Kardinal K to raise money for Habitat for Humanity

Botsford/Swinford, Crosley/Rogers halls sponsor event

The 10th annual Kardinal K, sponsored by Botsford/Swinford Halls and Crosley/Rogers Halls, is set for Saturday.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Botsford/Swinford, and the race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

The event is a five-kilometer race around the Ball State campus with divisions for running, walking and wheelchair participants.

The money raised at the event will go to support the Muncie chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In the past, the proceeds have gone to other charities, but Kardinal K chairperson Nicole Schneider said the committee decided to send the money in a different direction this year.

"I just pitched the idea to my committee, and that's what they chose to do," Schneider said.

Registration fees are $10 for students and faculty and $12 dollars for members of the Muncie community.

Schneider said the committee hopes to attract at least 70 people for the race.

"That's a low estimate," Schneider said. "We're shooting for more."

The race will begin at Botsford/Swinford, and the course will run through campus, winding down McKinley, Neely, New York and Riverside avenues. It will finish back at Botsford/Swinford.

This is the first year Crosley/Rogers has been involved in Kardinal K. In the past it was put on only by Botsford/Swinford.

Alyssa Koelling, a Crosley/Rogers resident who has been involved in planning for the event, said the race is a good way for her hall to become more active. Crosley/Rogers is located in the girls-only Woodworth Complex, and Koelling said that that sometimes keeps her hall from being involved in these types of events.

Koelling said residents in her hall have helped prepare for the event by developing a logo, drawing up flyers and getting materials together.

Koelling said she jumped at the chance to work on the project because she saw it as a way to become more active at Ball State.

"I wanted to get involved in the campus community other than Woodworth Halls," Koelling said.

If rain postpones the event, the race will be rescheduled for the following Saturday, May 1.
