Students celebrate choice of life

Organization gives gifts to Ball State mother at shower

Gifts and balloons filled the Student Center Music LoungeThursday night as students gathered to celebrate a Ball Statesenior's choice of life for her baby.

Members of the Ball State Students for Life provided gifts forsenior Tracey Pitts and her three-month-old child Kaydn AnthonyPitts during the organization's fifth annual baby shower.

"We try to do something nice for a woman who's chosen life forher baby, and this was to help her out with things that she mightneed and can't afford," sophomore treasurer Michelle Runyonsaid.

After enjoying cake and a game of "Baby Bingo," studentspresented Pitts with teethers, diapers and other items. Pitts saidshe was excited to be part of the shower and appreciated theorganization's contributions.

"It's a lot easier (for people) to spend a few dollars here andthere than for one person to spend the amount that 10 people did,"Pitts said. "It just really helps me."

When she found out she was pregnant, Pitts said she had no ideahow she would afford a baby, especially without child support. TheBall State senior said she never considered abortion, however.

"That was not an option for me," she said. "I found the easiestway to get through this because I got support from friends andpeople on campus, and my church is awesome."

Though she initially received discouraging comments from herfamily, Pitts said she was determined to continue working in Muncieand wanted to complete her social work major at Ball State.

Having a child has made her a stronger person, she said.

"I prepare myself better," Pitts said. "I deal with heartachebetter, just the hard things you go through in life, and it's mademy faith stronger too."

The purpose of Ball State Students for Life is to educate thecampus about the effects of abortion on both the woman and herfamily and to also help women in need, Runyon said.

The organization works closely with Heart to Heart PregnancyCare Center in Muncie, which is available for women who areconsidering abortion and want to learn other options, who wouldlike a pregnancy test or who desire counseling. Clothing, diapersand other resources are also available at the center, Runyonsaid.

"We want women to have their babies and choose life," she said."Our group is here to help in any way possible, whether by giving ababy shower or having a person to talk to."

Ball State Students for Life will have their next meeting at 8p.m. on April 12 in Robert Bell Building Room 112.
