Senators sponsor voter drive

Rep. Pence, Mayor Canan will participate in Friday's 'Vote More in '04' event

The Student Government Association said Wednesday that it is moving forward with its voter registration drive Friday and other community outreach programs.

The "Vote More in '04" campaign will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Art and Journalism Building Room 175, and SGA will have a table on the building's first floor.

Last week, after learning that Vice President Dick Cheney was speaking in Indianapolis on Friday, SGA didn't know whether its scheduled politicians could still attend.

However, Congressman Mike Pence will participate in the voter drive from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., Sen. Steve Geraci said. Pence might give a 15 minute speech in Room 175 as well.

Mayor Dan Canan and representatives from the Mitch Daniels and Ralph Nader campaigns will be in the Atrium and Room 175 throughout the afternoon.

"Mayor Canan I know wants to find out student opinions on certain contemporary issues," Geraci said.

Geraci said the Governmental and Student Affairs Committee invited many local politicians to attend.

During the voter drive, students can register to vote, fill out an absentee ballot, pick up an application for SGA and meet some current SGA senators.

Students can also meet senators at the University Program Board's Year End Carnival co-sponsored by SGA. The event that includes carnival rides, food, dunk tank and games is free for students and $5 for their guests.

Because of student concerns, the Academic Affairs Committee has been working on legislation to get professors' names on Course Request. Next week, the committee will present the legislation to the senate.

SGA President Ben Tietz said one of two things could happen. The senate could vote on the legislation if it votes to bypass the bylaws. Tietz said the bylaws say the legislation should have its first reading on Monday, its second reading on Wednesday, and the senate would vote next semester.

"I think it's nice to know who the professor is, that way students can prepare themselves for the next semester," Tietz said.

To help raise student awareness of student government and community issues, Sen. Katie Carlson said "Spring Clean Up" is from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot behind the arena.

The event is a competition between fraternities, sororities, organizations, groups and anyone who wants to register from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Carlson said.

Students can win wings from BW3's or gift certificates to the 909 Grille if they collect the most trash from Bethel Avenue to Jackson Street and Tillotson Avenue to Wheeling Avenue. Trash that fits in a bag is five points, and trash that doesn't fit is 10 points.

This is the third year for the clean up, Tietz said. Last year, students collected more than 1,000 pounds of trash, he said.

"We just want to try to clean campus," Carlson said. "We're just trying to help the Muncie neighborhoods to clean up our shared community. It's a great way to get Ball State students out into the community."
