OUR VIEW Going in the right direction

AT ISSUE: Students protest, march against "Police Yourself" and Muncie's crackdown

It would be wonderful if all Ball State's problems were solved by one rally. Students could go about their lives as they did long before tragedy hit campus.

But the fight is not over. One rally will not explain to the administration, the city of Muncie or the Student Government Association what about the campaign or the crackdown that students do not support.

Students showed with Monday's rally that they are prepared to band together against "Police Yourself" and Muncie's crackdown. That benefits the cause, but not enough to sell the point to major decision makers in the university and the city.

SGA is sponsoring a forum about this topic at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Teachers College Room 102. This gives students time not only to assemble with complaints, but also solutions. Students should ask questions and research to find what they would change about the way Muncie and Ball State have handled an issue that affects everyone.

Voicing concerns is the first step in a long process of evaluation, understanding and compromise. The administrators and Muncie officials will not be convinced by an angry mob. They might be convinced by an organized group with a list of specific goals and concerns.

Students made strides down McKinley Avenue Monday in the right direction. They went to SGA president Ben Tietz and university president Beverley Pitts for answers. Whether they received responses is one thing, but the students showing they know where to go to get things done helps further their cause.

Ball State students made it clear they are ready to talk. They want to be involved in future decisions regarding the university's alcohol policies and Muncie's reactions.

This might take awhile if Ball State and Muncie are not ready to listen. Band together, find common ground, brainstorm solutions and make officials want to work with students.

Students showed they knew where to go. Now they need to show they know what to do when they get there.
