AT ISSUE: NYU Student given free housing after eight-month stay in university library

Officials at New York University found Steve Stanzak's online journal, where he had documented his experiences staying at the NYU Bobst Library since the beginning of the academic year, according to the Associated Press.

The university relocated Stanzak to a residence hall - free of charge, until the end of the semester.

He did not get kicked out of housing for violations, nor did he refuse to pay rent. He could not afford the $1,000 housing deposit. It would be simple to say, "It's a $1,000, figure it out."

Not many students work four jobs, receive a $15,000 scholarship from the school and have several student loans like Stanzak does.

His divorced parents provided him with no financial assistance.

Maybe it is not so easy to figure this one out.

In a Web log entry, Stanzak wrote that the room the university gave him had a $10,980 price tag.

But something could have been done to prevent the university from having to pay Stanzak's way - not that the charity is uncalled for. Stanzak often showered at friend's apartments. Any good friend would let another crash on his futon or couch until he found a permanent solution.

Stanzak's scholarship and dedication to the school show that he deserves to be enrolled at NYU.

"My worst fear was getting kicked out of NYU. I love this school," he said in an AP report.

When it comes to people that are making a serious effort to fund their own education, friends and family should do their best to help out. Sometimes the financial means are not there, but if a Ball State student was left homeless because he could not afford housing, he could only hope that friends would be there to help him.

Stanzak was not riding out a scholarship and financial aid. He was making a conscious decision to stay in school, even if it meant holding down four jobs. That deserves more than a few showers at friend's apartments. NYU took the initiative to make sure he was not left out in the cold.

But his family or friends should have done the same before his first night sleeping in a library basement.
