MEN'S GOLF Cardinals travel to Kentucky for Johnny Owens Invitational

Following a two-week break from competition, the men's golf teamwill be back in action Friday at the Johnny Owens Invitational. Thetwo-round tournament will take place at the University Club (BigBlue Course) in Lexington, Ky.

Ball State is coming off a solid fourth-place finish out of 17teams at the El Diablo Invitational. The team also placed 10th tostart the season at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic. The Cardsfinished as the top Mid-American Conference school in bothtournaments, which has been one of the team's goals.

"We want to be as competitive as we can against conferenceschools," coach Mike Fleck said.

The Cardinals have been led in the first two events by C.D.Hockersmith. The freshman used a second round one-under-par 71 tofinish in a tie for sixth out of 85 golfers at El DiabloInvitational. The solid showing earned him MAC player of theweek.

The time off between events has given the Cards some time tofine-tune their games.

"We want to try to get better each and every day," Flecksaid.

"We need to be prepared to compete week in and week out to be atthe top of MAC schools."
